Going into this animation project I want sure what to do, but I knew I wanted to do something that swirled. After looking at a couple examples online I decided it would be cool to do some sort of symbol.

I drew a couple shapes and symbols to get an idea of what I wanted to do. I didn’t like any of the symbol that I came up with, but I did like the shape below. I recreated the shape in Illustrator and played with it until I made a symbol out of it.

I really liked the symbol and decided to go with it. I wanted to use a symbol with meaning. This one has no meaning yet, but I’ll come up with something eventually. Till then no one will know what it means.

I had to get it into small pieces so I could animate the pieces to get the swirling effect. I used the divide tool to get it into a bunch of small shapes. What I didn’t realize is that by cutting it into small shapes I was going to end up with a ton of layers in after effects to edit. I originally planed on parenting the layers to animate more quickly, but that gave it a very uniform look and I wanted the swirl to be a little chaotic.

I had to animate each individual shape, but got a cool look of all the pieces swirling together to form the symbol, then busting apart and flying off screen.
