Syzygy (pronounced sih-zih-jee) is a noun used to describe “a conjunction or opposition, especially of the moon with the sun.” It’s also the only word in the English language with three y’s. I thought this unique word would be great to use for a unique band.
I had a ton of ideas at first. The “half-shaven dude” idea I ended up going with was actually one of the first ones I thought of. I had a few other ideas I really liked, but when I started trying to make them in Illustrator I realized that they wouldn’t work or weren’t quite as cool as I had thought. The idea I went with doesn’t have a hidden meaning or anything, it just made me think of the hipster/indie/lumberjack looking guys that would probably be at shows like these.
Eventually I came up with this. I had the basic idea down but couldn’t find colors that complemented each other in a way I liked. I wanted it to be just a little weird, but also cohesive and not too loud.
I got some feedback and realized that the band name was too plain and didn’t contrast enough with the font I used for the date, time, and location. I redid it and went with a more graffiti-looking approach that I really ended up liking. I added some splats to make it look like paint.
I also chose a third color for the titles to make it stand out more. I think this really unified the poster and made it look like a whole. Lastly, I threw some textures onto it and made it longer. I’m happy with how it turned out! Now I want to go to a Syzygy concert…
