I decided for my sticker project that I really wanted to incorporate my little dog (Lola, a chiweenie) into my designs. I decided to design her at the beach because I’m ready to head to the beach for spring break next week and that’s really all I can think about.

I started out with awful sketches. I’m a horrible sketcher (is that what it’s called? a sketcher?) and so I admittedly don’t try too hard in my sketching. I’ve found that once I get into illustrator and start playing around with shapes and ideas that my designs just kind of form from there.

I have always wanted to rent a jeep and drive down the Pacific Coast Highway in California so I came up with the idea of doing a jeep with little Daisy wheels almost like a Volkswagon. Then I designed giant sunglasses and a beach chair, and then I did my dog’s signature pose: her standing with her butt in the air investigating something on the ground…in this case, a starfish.

This was difficult because I didn’t realize how hard a dog would be to design. I tried and tried and tried for at least a couple of hours just trying to get the body shape right on the last sticker. It was so hard! But I really like my color scheme and how they turned out!
