For my 12 vector icons I had few different ideas but narrowed it down to trying different kinds of hairstyles because I am a licensed cosmetologist and love hair. I thought this would be perfect because there are so many different kinds of hair and styles to work with. And people even have all sorts of hair color now a days so I played with that a little in my process as well.
First I narrowed down what I wanted to do to hairstyles and started sketching out a few ideas. I didn’t love all of my ideas but was able to look at what details I did like and was able to think about how to incorporate that into the design. The following are the first sketches I came up with.:
I then posted the sketches on Slack to see what feed back I received from classmates. Most of the comments were that number 12 was their favorite because it seemed the most realistic to them. I then started taking what I wanted to remain the same in each head and designed it in Illustrator. The elements that remained the same were the head shape, skin color, and facial expression, and the glasses.
Here is what the first round of putting my ideas into Illustrator looked like.:
I was able to have these critiqued by my professor and met with him for some more advise on what to do to improve them. The main things to improve were to take out extra, not needed anchor points in the hair, like in the pink ladies hair, and to focus on giving the hair more depth by adding shadows to the hair to give it more shape. I liked adding shadows because I felt like it really did give the icons more of a shape instead of a flat looking icon. Here was the next step as I continued to work on the icons:
And in the end this is how the icons looked. I learned a lot during this project and can’t wait to keep learning more and to keep applying what I learned to future projects!:
