When I started thinking of ideas, I started to think of things I love. I thought of travel, ice cream, and then I thought of flowers. I didn’t want to make all of the icons flowers, so I decided to do gardening. My grandma loves gardening and so did my grandma that has passed away, so I wanted to make some of those icons to represent my grandmas. The flowers are for my Grandma Miller who passed away because we would press flowers together and the gardening tools are for my Grandma Lewis because she is always in the garden.

I used some methods that Brother Kerr suggested and just let my hand draw what came to mind when I thought of flowers. I listened to some instrumental music and just enjoyed sketching whatever, not worrying about what I was drawing. Then I numbered them, so people could tell me what they thought about certain ones.

My first drafts were very simple and I also just started with the flowers. To be honest it was very hard for me at first. The hardest thing was shadows and highlights and just trying to figure out how light would hit certain things. The feedback I got was that it was too busy and I should focus on either doing strokes or shapes. I was able to get the hand of things more in Illustrator and felt more comfortable problem solving.

I’m actually pretty proud of my first project. My favorite icon is the watering can. It was super fun to play with the shadows and highlights and I think that is the point I started to get a hang of things. I like the different flowers I chose and think that each icon represents some of my grandmas’ favorite things.
