For my Vector Graphics class we were tasked with the duty of coming up with 12 uniform icons. These could be about anything we want, so I chose to base mine off of a pretty spiffy webcomic called Elf and Warrior. I am pretty sure that I am the only one in the class that has read this webcomic, so I was hoping that my icons could be a cool little intro to the story by showing each of the characters. As I started my draft I decided that trying to embody each of the characters personalities from an iconic scene would be a good way to do this.
Like all good designers I started out by just sketching out some of my ideas. I tried different characters to see if there was any style that I could get them to all conform to. After a while I came up with 4 basic styles that you can see outlined in the dark box.
Starting the Adventure:
Next it was time for me to go to Adobe Illustrator and start making these puppies a reality. I decided to go with the flat circle head idea from my sketches. The first three icons were mostly just me experimenting, but by the time I got to our lovely goldfish, Gillbert, I had a pretty good sense of the style I wanted to go with.
The Happy Ending…
Here we come to the end of the quest. I put a picture of the original characters next to my finished icons so you can see where I am coming from. It has been a long journey, but much has been learned! I am pretty proud of where I am so far, but I still think that there is a lot of room for improvement. For example, I like the eyes with the actual eyeballs a lot better than the pill shaped eyes I used for most of the characters. Also I think that Puglas, the pug with the cowboy hat, could use a little work. I’m just not really feeling his personality like I do with some of the other characters. So even though this is the end of the road for now, that doesn’t mean this story is over. Perhaps I will revisit these guys for a sequel!
